Abstract
Hwasung¡¤Goon is located in the south-western part of Kyunggi-Do and borders Shiheung-Goon on the north, with Yongin-Goon on the east, with Pyungtack-Goon on the south and Yellow Sea on the west. Soowon city is located in the north-eastern part of Hwasung-Goon. Baekhak-Myun, Yunchun Goon Is located in the south-eastern part of YunchunGoon, most of which is still belonged to North Koreaand Baekhak-Nyun has also been belonged to North Korea until 1953 and is mountainous. Hwasung-GoonIs composed of flat fields and low mountains, contains,17 Myuns, Woojung, Jangan, Paltan, Yangkam, Hyangnam, Jungnam, Ohsan, Dongtan, Daean, Bongdam, Bibong, Namyang, Mado, Suhshin, Songsan, Maesong and Banwol Each Myun has about10,000-15,000 population and has 5 to 10 Ris.
This study was directed to these districts as a partof the program of studying directly making a trip to each Myun in every Goon in Kyunggi-Do as findingout the districts which have the crayfish and crabs having Paragonimus metacercaria is urgent because many children in rural areas eat raw and slightly roasted crayfish and crabs and there is a traditional custom in Korea of taking raw crayfish juice for the treatment of measles, producing many public health problem.
One primary school from each Myun except Mado Myun was selected and the pupils in older age groups were tested for thls study being asked about their custom of eating raw and inadequately roasted crayfish and crabs and their environmental situation regarding drinking water and testing them with Paragonimifs and Clonorchis antigen. The crayfish caught from the districts considered to be an endemicarea were examined for Paragonimus metacercaria.
In spite of the fact that many children in both Soowon and Hwasung-Goon ate raw and poorly roasted crayfish, crabs and soysouce soaked crabs, the districts were do not have pupils showing positiveto Paragonimus skin test were Soolvon city, Woojung, Paltan, Yangkam, Hyangnam, Jungnam, Daean and Bibong-Myuns; all of the other Myuns in Hwasung Goon also showed lower positive rate as being 1.1% in Jangan-Myun, 0.8% in Ohsan, 1.9% in Dongtan,1.5% in Bongdam, 2.0% in Namyang, 0.9% inSuhshin, 2.0% in Songsan, 1.4% in Maesong and3.8% in Banwol-Myun. Crayfish caught from Banwol-Myun didn¢¥t have Paragonimus metacercaria. Baekhak-Myun, Yunchun-Goon is considered to bean endemic area of Paragonimiasis judging from theresults obtained from this study showing 13.7 percent of positive rate to Paragonimus skin test and 0.9per cent of infestation rate of crayfish to Paragonimus metacercaria caught from this district.
The custom of taking raw crayfish juice for thetreatment of measles is prevalent in these Goonswhich may give many harmful effects to growing children. I wish the Public health authorities and the school authorities in these Goons would strive to eradicate this bad custom.
